What is Active Release Techniques ® (ART) ?
Active Release Techniques is a patented, soft tissue system that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fascitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved with ART.
These problems have all one important thing in common: they are all result from overused muscles that accumulate excessive scar tissue that restricts normal movement and function of soft tissue structures involved.
Active Release Treatment:
Every ART session is actually a combination of examination and treatment. The ART provider uses his or her hands to evaluate the texture, tension, movement and function of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements.
There are over 500 specific moves- unique to ART and there are constantly being upgraded. They allow providers identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each patient.
How do overuse injuries occur?
Over-use injuries occur primarily through the repetitive nature of certain movements that are required for performance. Some examples include running, swimming, cycling, golf, and certain occupational demands. The repetitive movement patterns result in certain muscles, ligaments, tendons, and joints receiving increased stress resulting in the accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma). Over time, this can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue that results in alterations of normal movement patterns and joint function. The resulting dysfunction places forces on structures that cannot meet the increased demands. Injuries can manifest as a loss of strength, pain, and decreased range of motion. If a nerve becomes trapped numbness, weakness, and tingling can result.
How Chiropractic and Active Release Technique (ART) work togetherChiropractic works well to release joint capsule restrictions and to restore motion back to fixated joints, however these joint restrictions will often return if the original soft tissue problem(s) are not addressed. Since muscles and ligaments attach to bone directly, they will pull onto the affected joints, forcing them back into fixation and/or misalignment if the restricted/tightened tissues are left untreated. This phenomenon explains the reason why many patients feel GREAT immediately following an adjustment, but then felt like they were stiff again a day or even a few hours later. Without ART, the results of Chiropractic are often limited in their ability to provide complete resolution for many musculoskeletal problems.
